Question: How is level 9 impossible?

level 13 is possible

1. Nf3 Nf6 2. Ne5 Ng4 3. Ng6 Ne5 4. Nxh8 Ng6 5. Nxg6 Nc6 6. Nf4 Nb8 7. Nh3 Nc6 8. Nc3 Na5 9. Nd5 Nc6 10. Nb6 Nb4 11. Nxa8 Nc6 12. Nb6 Nb4 13. Ng1 Nd5 14. Nc4 Nc3 15. Na3 Nb1 16. Nxb1

can someone pkease just tell me the answer for level 12

fell free to use rot13

for level 10 its Rh3

For the 3 pawn one you can't have 3 pawns on a edge because the only other pawn that can get to there is the pawn next to it

That's not true. The pawn from 2 files away can get there via 2 sequential captures

o

sorry I didn't know

Worded vaguely, Level 13 is just as impossible if you switch the colors' roles in the solution.

because of the change in contrast, when the bottom row is RED'ed out, the White King looks like he's on a white square, which then makes the square next to him look black...

Why is pawn e2 and g2 impossible?

The bishop can't get out without moving one of those pawns and they can't move back

Your level 12 solution can't be done as no pieces can be placed on A1

Also before you claim that I shouldn't apply the Cypher to the tile co-ods you should know that invalidates all you solutions that apply the cypher to the co-ods

how do you uncypher

Cool game

(+1)(-1)

Le niveau 7 est beaucoup trop dur, toutes les positions sont possible, oû que l'on mette une tour ou un pion...

(+1)(-1)

There is a bug: It says that two pawns on the same column are possible. The only way for that to be done is for capture or en passant

(+1)

I think that,  if it's possible for two pawns to be on the same column, then it's possible & not a bug

I pass level 9 but I don't know why the position is impossibl

It's bc first, you develop your knight to c3. the only move for black without moving pawns is to develop their knight. Then you put your knight in e4, only black move : knight anywhere. Then you check black in e6. Black is forced to take the knight, but they can't move their knight back.

(+1)

Well, the two knights could have danced around for a bit before putting black in check. But crucially each knight changes the colour of its square with every move. If white's knight is on black and black's knight is on white, then they've each made the same number of moves, which means black moved last, which means black moved while in check and was still in check at the end of their turn which is impossible.

(+2)(-1)

What the heck is the answer for level 7 (pawns and rooks left)? Any position allowed is legal.

(+2)(-1)

Nevermind, I got it.

However... Level 11 shouldn't have any possible position at all since the black queen couldn't get out.

(+1)

Nevermind episode 2: I forgot the king can move other than by casteling.

I finished the game! \o/ it was amazing

(+1)

Niveau 8 je vous en supplie

(+1)

(1 edit) (+1)

Level 12 is way too  hard, maybe a hint please

You need to use 3 pawns of the same color.

3 pawn in corner

(1 edit) (-1)

lvl 9??? I don't play chess 😭

(+3)(-1)

This is such a cool concept and great execution with how it teaches the ideas gradually. Though I do wish there were more puzzles! I feel there are lots of things to explore with this concept!

Here is an example puzzle I came up with, but it's a bit of a twist on the concept: you need to place one piece/pawn of any color (not on the red squares) in order to make the position possible (rather than impossible). This one is a pretty difficult puzzle. (Also please ignore the terrible editing haha.)

I think I've got it : you have to place a white pawn on c6. Last move by white was bxc6 en passant (great idea to implement this weird rule in a puzzle btw).

(+1)(-1)

this game is wayyy too normal

(+1)

I agree.

Clever

(+2)(-1)

too normal, not enough bcat112a vibes

(1 edit)

In level 10, how is B6k/6B1/8/8/8/4K3/8/Q6/B possible?  Black is in check, so white has just moved, there is a single check, so white has just moved the bishop.   Undoing any possible move leads to a check on the king, so Black has moved into that check or ignored it illegally.

(+1)(-1)

It is possible if white last move was to capture a piece on g7. Let us say a black pawn.
Before the white bishop moved to g7 capturing the pawn, that pawn shielded the king from the white queen.

Help pls 😥

Did you find the solution for two rooks ? (Lvl8)

Yes, I think it was a6 and c6, but i brute-forced it

(I hope my explanation is clear enough ^^")

there's only a knight and the night has to move back but the 2 rooks would prevented that and you can't move the other knight because it isn't there

(1 edit) (+1)

What possible previous two moves could there be such that this level 10 board state could possibly be legal?

(1 edit) (+2)

I think I see it now, if there was a black rook on d4 then the moves: Kh8, Bxd4+
Would render the position legal

Awesome game, the chess community would love this.

level ten was proved to be incorrect by icely

How so ?

(+1)

clever puzzles! some were too clever for me and i got some of them by accident but figuring out how a position was impossible was fun

Need help

hint How could the bishop have moved the bottom left corner? Is there a way to make it impossible for the bishop to have moved there?

Isn't level 12's solution technically possible cause

Arent every board from white’s perspective?

There are rank/file labels on the screen in my window?   Was this just added after you left the comment?

Yes, there was an update that added those labels and changed a few levels.

completed!!! fun game

Could someone explain me one thing please (a screenshot and possible spoilers ahead):

Why is this possible? You cannot do a mate twice, nor you can move Black King to that upper right corner if the corner is being guarded by either Queen or Rook. I beat the level nevertheless, but I still don't understand why my solution is wrong.

Anyone know how to do level 8?

Yes that needs to be rot13, I'm not letting anyone be spoiled.

(+1)

This is the level that says "White to move", meaning black has just moved. Pbafvqre jung oynpx cvrprf pbhyq unir zbirq, naq znxr gung vzcbffvoyr.

How is that simultaneously unhelpful, but also helped me?

Also I said I'm not letting anyone get spoiled so I am slightly upset about how you described the level normally >:(

Oh, and, people, giving level numbers for the early levels is pointless.  Levels 1-5 are just five different impossibilities for the same position; you can permute those solutions arbitrarily within that set.  Similarly, 6 and 7 can be interchanged.

I too am having trouble with level 12.  I'm about ready to try brute-forcing it (screen-scraping the display for output and generating artificial mouse events for input)....

i still cant do level 11 even with the hint

(1 edit) (+1)

Since Black is in check, it obviously was White's move last, and, because the knight is pinnned by Black's queen, White must have been in check after Black's last move.  But in a legal game, White cannot have been in check _before_ that Black move.  Lbh arrq gb svaq cynprf sbe gur ebbx naq ovfubc fhpu gung, sbe nal bs Oynpx'f cbffvoyr cerivbhf zbirf, Juvgr jnf va purpx orsber gung zbir.  If you still have trouble, wait a day or two and I'll point out another consideration which might help.

The knight has just checked the black king, so it must have just moved. This means black's queen was checking white just before. So black must have just made a move that put the queen in that corner square. Make it impossible for the queen to have moved there.

(+1)

> So black must have just made a move that put the queen in that corner square.

True, but only because the position is such that none of black's other possible previous moves would have discovered check on white - well, without already having had white in check; black's bishop could have discovered check from the queen, but it would have had to itself had white in check to do so.  (I'm just trying to keep people from jumping to unwarrantedly general conclusions based on this special case.)

Man, Level 12 is making me unreasonably upset. In a vacuum, three pawns of either color can be in literally any configuration between the 2nd and 7th ranks, so something about the queen-king setup on the side matters...

But how can it matter? Both queens amd kings can get to those positions regardless of how the pawns are set, and vice versa.

Lbhe pbawrpgher nobhg gur inphhz pnfr vf jebat. Gur evtug fvqr qbrfa'g znggre, gur fbyhgvba vf nyy nobhg gur cnjaf.

(+1)

Yeah.  My brute-force program found an answer (not "the" answer; there are at least two) overnight, and, once I see it, it's obvious.
